Chris Houghton, Ghana’s Coach Is Fired!!

Chris Hughton the head coach of the Black Stars has been announced by The Ghana Football Association (GFA) that he has been fired from his position. A choice was made when the Black Stars were humiliatingly eliminated concerning AFCON 2023 despite failing each of the three in their group matches.

The GFA issued a statement announcing the dismissal of the technical squad just four hours after it was made public that Ghana had withdrawn early from the tournament in Ivory Coast. In the following days, the FA promised to “provide an itinerary for the next phase of the Black Stars.”

Following Otto Addo’s appointment in February 2023, Hughton assumed his position. After the 2022 World Cup, Addo’s contract with the men’s senior national team expires. He oversaw the start of the Stars’ 2026 World Cup training season in addition to taking the team through the tournament in Ivory Coast and overseeing the last Ghanaian finalists for AFCON 2023.

Before becoming head coach of the Black Stars, Chris Hughton was chosen as their technical advisor. Prior to the team’s two-leg playoff encounter versus Nigeria for the 2022 Rugby World Cup qualifications, he held this post during the Qatar tournament. Hughton coached the Black Stars for 13 games, achieving 4–5 in wins, 5–5 in ties, and 4–4 in defeats.

In nine competitive games, Hughton’s team ended with three wins, two defeats, and four draws. Aside from the outcomes, the Black Stars’ play under the former manager of Nottingham Forest, Brighton, and Newcastle has come under fire, which has contributed to the team’s poor showing at AFCON 2023.

His choices and management of the games have often been questioned by supporters and pundits. After drawing with Mozambique and Egypt after succumbing to Cape Verde running the group’s first game, Ghana was knocked out by the AFCON for the subsequent year in a row at the group stage. Hughton accepted responsibility for the Ivory Coast’s poor performance.
