According to reports, the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has ordered the Kumasi Traditional Council to adjourn the meeting due to the New Patriotic Party’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, allegedly showing disrespect towards the person occupying the Golden Stool.
The report said that the “Asantehene specifically declared as Chairman Wontumi is his own grandchild and would not subject the Asantehene, the Sika Dwa, or him to any kind of disrespect as claimed.”
According to the report, the Asantehene expressed his anger towards Baffour Owusu Amankwatia VI, the Bantamahene, for causing unnecessary stress to Asante ahead of the Sagrenti War’s 150th anniversary celebration and his coronation’s 25th anniversary. He further stated that he had not instructed any individual to call on Chairman Wontumi on any subject.
Additionally, the report stated that this data demonstrates the Asantehene’s distaste for Manhyia and the Golden Stool interfering in minor partisan political matters.
On Monday, January 29, 2024, the Kumasi Traditional Court was to meet with the NPP’s Ashanti Regional Chairman.
Recall;
The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, better known as Wontumi, was called before the Kumasi Traditional Council due to alleged disparaging comments made about Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene.
To resolve remarks made during the screening of parliamentary candidates in Manhyia South, the Council instructed the NPP management to ensure Wontumi appears next Monday.
Wontumi’s present health state was cited by NPP National Organiser Henry Nana Boakye and General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong in their request for a two-week extension. Outraged, the Council insisted that Wontumi be present—even if he had to use a wheelchair—and on Monday, they requested that Maurice Ampaw, the lawyer, and the management of Wontumi Radio and TV make an appearance.
Guaranteeing the governing body of Wontumi its cooperation, the NPP dissociated itself from Mr. Ampaw’s purported remarks.
Wontumi was branded a person of no consequence in the area by the Ashanti Youth group in retaliation for allegedly offensive remarks.
On January 17, 2024, a news conference in Kumasi announced the ban in response to allegations made by Chairman Wontumi that he had “built his empire with the law enforcement force within the Asante Kingdom.”
On January 17, 2024, a news conference in Kumasi announced the ban in response to allegations made by Chairman Wontumi that he had “built his empire with the law enforcement force beneath the Asante Kingdom.”
Chairman Wontumi was not only barred from the Ashanti Region, but he was also not allowed to enter Manhyia Palace or any other palace in the region, as the youth expressed their displeasure.
The teenager referred to the Ashanti Regional chairman’s actions as a “uncalled-for” outburst and a “display of not having reverence for the golden stool,” which prompted the decision.
Before considering Chairman Wontumi’s reinstatement into the Asanteman, Mr. Eugene Oppong, a representative of the furious youth, made a public apologies demand to the press.
Mr. Oppong emphasized that Chairman Wontumi should be held completely accountable for his remarks, which he said were derogatory to the Asante Kingdom and the Golden Stool in particular.
Chairman Wontumi is said to have asserted that he had “built his own kingdom with military and police force in the Asante Kingdom” during the screening process for NPP parliamentary candidates in the Ashanti region.
The regional chairperson and Alhaji Abuba, the NPP’s Manhyia South Organiser, reportedly got into an argument before the announcement was made.
Wontumi was reportedly questioned by Nana Kwaku Duah, the Chief of Kokoso and Chairman of the Council of Elders for Manhyia South, who was also a member of the vetting committee. Duah asserted that no individual of the Asante, which is the Kingdom owned a kingdom save the Asantehene.
But Wontumi allegedly claimed that he was entitled to voice his thoughts outside the Asante Kingdom, regardless of how they differed from the Asante monarch’s.
